1st Annual LONA OLYMPICS

By: Florence Mills, DOR, Legend Oaks North Austin, TX

We had our 1st Annual LONA Olympics from August 26 to 30, 2024. The whole Therapy team and our activities director worked together with our residents to make sure we had a very successful event. We had a Red team and a Blue team with their respective team captains to ensure all residents were able to practice and participate in their specific events.

We had our Olympics opening ceremony on August 26 at 10:30 a.m. with one of our residents singing "God Bless America," another resident holding the Olympic Torch, and two other residents holding the American flag. We then started our games, which consisted of wheelchair races — both assisted by a therapist and unassisted — as well as walking races with and without AD, with therapists assisting the participants.

  • On August 27, we had cup stacking and Nerf gun shooting of the stacked cups.

  • On August 28, we had bean bag tossing and noodle tossing inside the hula hoop.

  • On August 29, we had a team balloon volleyball competition and a darts game.

  • On August 30, the final day of the LONA Olympics, we had our Closing ceremony with the same resident who sang "God Bless America." We had wheelchair and walking relays for our final games.

After all the games, gold medals were given to all of our residents, who were our Olympic champions.
