CAPLICO: Passion For Learning

By Eddie Reyna, PT, DPT, Borderstone Therapy Resource, TX

Village Healthcare and Rehabilitation in McAllen, Texas (Keystone Borderstone), is thrilled to announce the recent celebration of therapy staff members who completed the LSVT BIG program. Brenda Palma, PT, DPT, along with Mehgan Flores, PTA, are newly certified, and George Garza, OT, completed his recertification. This is a significant milestone that will greatly benefit both the facility and patients.

What Is LSVT?

LSVT BIG is a specialized therapy program designed to help individuals with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions improve their movement and quality of life. The program focuses on enhancing gross motor skills through exercises that promote better balance, walking, posture, strength, and endurance.

The therapy is customized to each person’s needs and involves large, exaggerated movements to help “recalibrate” how they perceive their movements compared to how others see them. This can be particularly beneficial for tasks ranging from small motor activities like buttoning a shirt to large motor tasks like getting up from a chair.

Benefits for Our Facility

● Enhanced Reputation: Having certified LSVT therapists on staff enhances our facility’s reputation as a leader in specialized care for neurological conditions, particularly Parkinson’s disease.

● Expanded Services: We can now offer specialized LSVT LOUD and LSVT BIG programs, attracting more patients seeking these specific therapies.

● Professional Development: Our therapists’ advanced training ensures they are equipped with the latest techniques and knowledge, fostering a culture of continuous professional growth.

Benefits for Our Patients

● Improved Communication: LSVT LOUD helps patients with Parkinson’s disease improve their vocal loudness and clarity, significantly enhancing their ability to communicate effectively.

● Better Mobility: LSVT BIG focuses on improving motor skills, such as walking speed, balance, and overall movement, which can lead to a better quality of life.

● Increased Confidence: Patients often experience increased confidence and independence as they see improvements in their daily activities and interactions.

● Holistic Care: Our certified therapists provide personalized, evidence-based treatment plans tailored to each patient’s unique needs, ensuring comprehensive and compassionate care.

Gisela Reyes, PT, DPT, GCS, CEEAA, DOR, states, “We are excited about the positive impact our newly certified LSVT therapists will have on our community and look forward to continuing to provide exceptional care to our patients.”
